Benzaiten started originally as a deity associated with an ancient holy river and is was venerated as a personification of this river and water. Over time Benzaiten became associated with all things that flow like water such as poetry, art, and music. Thus, Benzaiten is depicted with a lute, or Biwa playing heavenly music.
